30 years ago Ginny and I were at a party in Newport Beach. While we were there two young men, who happened to be twins, came up to us and asked, “do you think that we could sell the fishing gaffs that we manufacture at your shows?” I replied, “Of course you can. I think you’ll do well.” They weren’t sure that the investment would pay off. So I said, “tell you guys what…you come to the shows and try to sell your gaffs. If you don’t sell enough to pay for the booth then it’s free, but if you do cover your costs then you can pay me. Is that a deal?” They said yes (I think it was in unison). The rest, as they say, is history. They sold all of their gaffs before the weekend and had to stay up all night making more. Thirty years later Accurate Fishing Products is the sponsor of the Main Seminar Stage at the Fred Hall Shows. Every hour one of the best anglers in the world will get up on that stage to give a seminar and share their valuable information about fishing, fishing tackle and fishing techniques.
And what a valuable resource we have right here in our own backyard. One of the worldwide leaders in the fishing tackle industry makes their home in Corona. Accurate Fishing Products was launched in 1990 as a division of the parent company, Accurate Grinding and Manufacturing Corporation, in Los Angeles California. Accurate Grinding is a family-owned operation, established in 1950, when Michael DeMarco developed specialized techniques to manufacture jet turbine engine components at a time when precision aerospace manufacturing was just beginning in Southern California.
In 1970 Michael’s son, Joe, and son-in-law, Jack (Nilsen), led Accurate Grinding into the CNC (computer numerical control) era of machining.
In 1990, Jack’s twin sons (Douglas and David…of the Newport party fame), having been raised around the machine shop their whole lives, started to make different products at their family’s business. Strong, unbendable gaffs were the first product. (which they sold at the Fred Hall Show). Each handle was hand turned and assembled and each gaff hook was hand ground and hand bent before heat treating. Soon after that they moved into the aftermarket upgrade business of “sideplates” and frames for Penn Reels. This product line taught the twins a lot about production, inventory, assembly and product design.
In 1997, the twins came up with an industry-changing idea. Douglas asked his dad “Why are there drags on only one side of a spool?” That question led them to invent TwinDrag technology. It was not an easy task but after 3 years the first TwinDrag, the Platinum ATD-30, was born.
In early 2000 the twins moved on to the smaller Boss line of reels, the TwinSpin spinning reels (I have two of them that I LOVE) and the Piranha pliers (I don’t go fishing without them).
In 2002 Accurate Fishing Products, in order to meet increased demand, moved from a 12,000 square-foot building in Los Angeles to a new 30,000 square foot facility in Corona. Then they introduced the Boss Extreme Series followed by the Dauntless Series and eventually the single drag Fury series.
2015 brought us the Valiant Series of TwinDrag reels, and fishing has never been the same. This all new design took the very popular BX Extreme reels and made them lighter by the use of CVX Technology using the Twins’ idea that a curved surface allowed for thinner material walls while retaining strength. They also pulled weight out of every internal part they could. The perfect balance of light weight and power for a more enjoyable fishing experience. I am always amazed that a Valiant reel that is so light and so small can so easily land such big fish. (see the accompanying pictures)
In 2018, Accurate Fishing entered the star drag market and of course did it with the first ever TwinStarDrag reel in the form of the Tern series. This patent pending design has stacked stainless steel and carbon fiber washer on each side of the main gear. When you turn the star to create more drag pressure it compresses the washers like a vise so the pressure is even on both sides of the gear. The TwinStarDrag system produces high drag pressure that is very smooth.
Before the introduction of their patented TwinDrag system, traditional fishing reel technology applied to a drag on just one side. (imagine if the brakes on your car were only on one side). The TwinDrag system increased the efficiency of equal pressure applied to both sides: the bearings and the spool shaft receive a more balanced load, translating into stronger, smoother drags, while the dual drag design also doubles heat dissipation. TwinDrag design also requires less pressure to be applied, while allowing precise drag settings with extremely little drag fluctuation.
Accurate TwinDrag reels offer excellent, unhindered free-spooling in every drag setting range from less than one pound to total lockdown. They’re always ready to fish right out of the box, with no additional “tuning” or “blueprinting” necessary.
What all of this means to the anglers is that their TwinDrag reels apply the smoothest, best balanced, most precisely set and maintained drag pressure possible, while not falling victim to the heat buildup that can cost you fish.
Stop by the Accurate Fishing Products booths at the Fred Hall Shows and find out about this 100% American made jewel of a fishing tackle company. Check out all of their incredible line of products (I especially like the Valiant series). And take some time to drop by the Accurate Fishing Products Main Seminar Stage at the shows and be entertained and informed.
